We’ve all heard it before: “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Whether you’re meeting new people at an event, attending a job interview, or even going on a first date, nailing that first encounter can set the tone for the friendship. So, how do you leave a lasting, positive impression? Here are some fun and practical tips to ensure you make an impression without getting awkward( we are here to the rescue).

1. Dress to Impress ( Of course for yourself)

First impressions are often visual. Think of your outfit as the cover of a book—you want it to match the story you’re telling. Whether it’s for work or a social gathering, choose clothing that fits the occasion but also reflects your personality and makes you comfortable. Feeling confident in what you wear is key to radiating confidence.  Don’t forget to glam up, look pretty and shed sparkles wherever you go.

  • Pro Tip: When in doubt, go for neutral tones with a pop of colour or statement accessory to express your uniqueness( if that’s your style, or just do what you wish – YOU DO YOU)

2. Flash That Genuine Smile

Smiles are contagious, and a warm, genuine smile can instantly make people feel at ease around you. Studies show that smiling can boost your own mood and make others feel more comfortable. The trick is to avoid forced or over-the-top smiles—just be yourself!

Like we said, YOU do YOU.

  • Pro Tip: Smile with your eyes (a.k.a. the “Duchenne smile”) for a truly authentic and engaging look.

3. Engage in the Conversation

While it’s easy to focus on how you’re coming across, remember that listening is just as important as talking. Show genuine interest in what the other person is saying by asking questions, nodding, and maintaining eye contact. (This can literally save you at work, trust us)

  • Pro Tip: Use the 80/20 rule—listen 80% of the time and speak for 20%. People will leave feeling valued and heard, however, never hesitate to speak your mind.

4. Mind Your Body Language

A simple and crisp introduction can set the tone for a great interaction. Make eye contact, offer a firm (but not crushing) handshake, and clearly state your name. A positive, confident greeting leaves a solid foundation for further conversation.

  • Pro Tip: Remember the other person’s name! Use it a couple of times during the conversation to help commit it to memory and make them feel special.

5. Nail the Introduction

A simple, effective introduction can set the tone for a great interaction.

6. Be Mindful of Your Tone

The way you say something is just as important as what you’re saying. A friendly, warm tone of voice can help you appear approachable and likable, whereas a monotone or disinterested voice might turn people off ( we know you know what to do)

  • Pro Tip: Match your tone to the occasion—professional for work situations, friendly and casual for social gatherings.

8. Follow Up

Want to really make an impression? Follow up after your first encounter! Whether it’s a quick text or email to say, “It was great meeting you,” this thoughtful gesture leaves a lasting positive memory of your interaction.

  • Pro Tip: Mention something specific from your conversation to show that you were really listening.

Making a great first impression doesn’t have to be intimidating or overwhelming. With these fun and practical tips, you’ll be well on your way to building lasting, positive connections—whether at work, a social event, or anywhere else you meet new people.

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.’
